For vietnamese who have many foreign exposure, they will understand when a foreign man speak lousy vietnamese.
They are used to the wrong vowel, tone, accent and they are patient to guess the meaning. This is the reason why many foreign man complain their gf understand their tieng viet but the vietnamese ppl in vietnam never understand when they speak tieng viet.

Yeah I don't think it's realistic to expect non Vietnamese speakers to be able to speak in Vietnamese and be understood here. Maybe in tourist areas where they're used to hearing bad Vietnamese, but these short time hotels for locals, I don't think it will work.
