Former River Valley High principal admits affair with school vendor

SINGAPORE - The former principal of River Valley High has admitted to lying to a civil servant about his extramarital affair with a school vendor.

According to local media reports, Koh Yong Chiah, 61, began an affair with 55-year-old Loke Wai Lin in 2001, when the pair developed a mutual attraction during an overseas community service project. They had sex for the first time during the trip to Lijiang, China.

The pair also bought two white gold rings as a sign to pledge their love for each other, reported Lianhe Wanbao. At that time, Koh was the principal of Chinese High School.Koh was investigated by the Ministry of Education (MOE) in 2005 for his alleged involvement with Loke but he denied the affair.

He was the principal of Jurong Junior College during that time.After Koh denied the affair to MOE official Ms Chia Ban Tin, she then submitted a report to the ministry to state that there was no misconduct on his part, according to The Straits Times.

Loke was a director and stakeholder of Education Architects 21, according to media reports. Her company provided education-related services to the college.

Over a period of seven years until 2012, Koh approved a total of 87 contracts worth $3.2 million to Loke, reported Channel NewsAsia. He was the principal of River Valley High from 2009 to 2012.A second charge of corruption against Koh will also be taken into consideration.

In 2012, Koh was suspected of being involved in corrupt dealings with Loke.The maximum punishment for Koh's offence is six months' jail and a $1,000 fine.Koh's second charge of corruption will also be taken into consideration during sentencing, according to The Straits Times.
