Good points by someone with obviously more experience in those places than myself. My own visits to those have just been different degrees of disaster. I tried solo ONCE. This was a now-gone place on Nguyen Phi Khanh street. I was taken to a room and beers brought in. I tipped mamasan 200,000 at the outset, which I'd been told was wise, and which was the going rate to get good service in those days. A lineup was brought in and it was really sub-par, nothing interesting basically. Afternoon here by the way, not sure it matters or not. I selected one of them who was barely ok. She sat down and we started having the beers and fruit. I think I'm (at least on this occasion) in the category of not being a ladies man because I was not able to get any fun going, and she wasn't really trying either. She was not initiating anything, and my efforts were pushed away. After about an hour it was obvious that this was a dead end, nothing to be salvaged. I didn't want her phone number, she was no fun to be with. I got my bill, and with tips and everything it cost over a million. So for a no-fun-at-all visit, it cost me that much. On the way out I was able to see much cuter young girls than were in my lineup sitting around in the hallway.
I've had at least one visit that was like you describe, with a group, big bill and no fun, I got there later and when it came time for me to get a girl they just kept bringing in one unattractive one, they did that a few times until I just accepted they had no cute girls available. Then a guy who came after me, they brought in a cute one to show him and he got her, so it was pretty frustrating.
I went to one with just one Vietnamese guy -- he got the fun, I got the butterfly who kept leaving the room and not coming back. I was the one paying, treating my VN friend. It reached the point of absurdity where I was just sitting there for 20 minutes watching him play with his girl, while I sat alone drinking my beer.
This next one doesn't count cuz it wasn't in Saigon, but in another small town, a few times I ran into pure ripoff situations where after we left the room, the staff opened all the remaining beer bottles in the case, I even literally caught them in the act once, and then they charged us for the whole case. Refusing to pay that inflated bill led them to grab clubs and rocks to threaten to hit us with. But I think this can only happen if you are way out there. I don't think there's a risk of anything like this happening in areas that foreigners frequent (at least I hope not).
