On your second point, this is gamemanship with no winners on the guys' side. You escalate things by getting her a $1.5k item, another one comes in with a $2k gift and so forth. The "last man standing" is considered the "winner" simply because nobody tops his, say, $5k stake.
But ultimately, what does he "win"?
The WL is, and will always be, the winner.
